Hi ,
I've been pondering social media quite a bit lately, and my evolving relationship with it. Here's the challenge: I get a lot of good out of social media. Facebook is great for connecting with and staying in touch with friends from around the world. I can't tell you the number of old colleagues, friend and relatives that I am connected with, and grateful to see what they're doing regularly. Instagram is interesting in seeing several friends and colleagues. Twitter is more for keeping up with
various political and business elements. But the problem is that there is a lot of negative fallout associated with social media. I could fill a book or five with the negative news about Facebook alone from what they've gone through in the past five years. I'm sure that the founders had little concept of how powerful and influential the company would become.
Twitter and Instagram are chockfull of ads. Hey, they're free, so what do we expect?
It's as much a love-hate relationship as I can imagine. I dread getting on to some of these platforms at times, but I also would deeply regret not seeing regular updates from friends and family.
No easy answers. It's the challenge of our times, I guess.
This week's issue brings you articles on attracting attention at tradeshows, how to annoy your prospects, and a bit of musing on mentorship in the podcast/vlog.
Soundtrack for this week's episode (the music playing in my office while I wrote these words): Nick Lowe's
Basher: The Best of Nick Lowe. Nick, who turned 70 a few months back, has quite an interesting rock and roll history,
growing from starting in bands at the age of 18. He's been associated with Brinsley Schwartz, Rockpile (with Dave Edmunds), Elvis Costello, Johnny Cash and many more.
Enjoy!
