Hi ,
And so we go. On into the last four months of 2020. In just a week or so, we'll be in September, which seems to be a big mental shift as we move out of summer, into fall, school, cooler weather. And maybe, just maybe, we'll stop with the "I never thought I'd have _____ on my 2020 Apocalypse Bingo Card!" memes that pop up every time something weird happens. Again!
This week on the blog, a new short video on how to find a whole lot of tradeshow marketing tips; a new post on getting ready to return to events, especially events that are smaller, or done by corporations that might need to rent some exhibit-type properties. Also a new interview with Marcus Vahle and John Pugh of Share Experience on what they're going through dealing with the pandemic and helping clients work through it as well.

"Many years ago I went white water rafting in Colorado. The guide told us that it was possible that we might fall into the river. If we did, we were to lie on our back with our feet out in front of us and allow the river to take us. We were not to fight the river. If we hit boulders, we would do so feet first and could then bounce off of them. The flow of the river would eventually take us to a calm place near the shore where we could get out of the river.
"Problem solving is like being in the river and fighting it. It’s going from boulder to boulder, one obstacle to another obstacle, solving each one then onto another obstacle while fighting against the flow of time. Sure, we eventually get to the shore but with great stress, limited resources and probably more delays."
Empathy is a cornerstone of emotional intelligence, or EQ, which is the ability to identify, evaluate, control, and express emotions. It's not only for leaders, but good leaders are emotionally intelligent. They're self-aware, reflective, and understand how others feel.
The psychologist C. Daniel Batson has studied empathy and discerned eight distinct concepts that are related to it:
- Knowing another’s thoughts and feelings;
- Imagining another’s thoughts and feelings;
- Adopting the posture of another;
- Actually feeling as another does;
- Imagining how one would feel or think in another’s place;
- Feeling distress at another’s suffering;
- Feeling for another’s suffering (sometimes called pity or compassion);
- Projecting oneself into another’s situation.
Each of those elements, if properly expressed, leads to deeper trust, better communication, and deeper relationships.
