This week's newsletter is accompanied by the lovely but obscure sounds of the LA band Charlie. They put out several albums during their roughly decade
run from the early 70s to the mid 80s before splitting (and reforming later on). Their record company, Polydor, thought very highly of them and put a lot of money into promoting their first few albums. I know, because I was a music director who heard from the company about the band. Good band. Check out this song, Johnny Hold Back.
Totally random trivia. In 2007 I was at a drum clinic to see the famous studio session drummer Steve Gadd, who's played with everybody from Paul Simon to Steely Dan. After waiting in line to have him
sign a Charlie album (the drummer's name in the band was Steve Gadd), he looked at it and said apologetically, "Uh, that's not me. There's another drummer named Steve Gadd, but I didn't play with this band!" He went on to tell me that while he'd never met the other Steve Gadd, they did stay at the same hotel one night when on tour. He said he kept getting the other Steve Gadd's messages and it was really confusing. Like I said, totally random trivia.
